EMC Looks to take Over IBM's Mainframe... Storage that is!
Since I'm in enrolled in a Storage Management Course this semester, I found this article rather interesting when I ran across it. It's a really good write-up on the emergence of EMC's new disk-based library storage technology for mainframe environments. As a prior IBM intern, I found this really cool especially after taking a picture of some random Tape I found in an abandoned office unit in my building... a couple of interns and I decided to go on a tour during lunch one day, Ha!!! Interestingly though, one of the interns was very knowledgeable about storage technologies so he filled us in on some things as we traveled through the mainframe and network storage labs as well.
Getting back to EMC, the new storage technology will now allow the Intel based processors of the mainframes to deliver system backups up to Four Times faster than anything that IBM currently has to offer. The new disk storage will also allow for virtual disk storage, utilizing it's "mainframe-like" capabilities. As we all know, when it comes to anything "Mainframe", speed is vital to the game. This plays a crucial role for IBM. Many mainframe operating shops are moving away from tape storage/backups to disk based libraries. With the history of IBM, an attempt for acquisition of the technology, or pumping up the R&D for an similar, if not better, version of the EMC technology wouldn't surprise me.
What better time than now for EMC...

Cloud Storage: What exactly is it?
(click the link)
Browsing around Android Central, I found an article that broke down just what Cloud Storage really is. I thought this was interested because of the rise in use of Cloud Storage and also because I've noticed that many people still don't really understand the concept of the service.
Cloud Storage is a rising service offered by providers who, after signup, give users large amounts of storage space (usually multiple gigabytes) to upload files and/or folders to a virtual online space, or "Cloud."
I feel that this could be very beneficial to all who dislike carrying physical memory or for those who like to have multiple backupsfor files, in which since Cloud-based, can be reached from almost any place,at any time.
Also, some Cloud-based utilities, such as Google Docs, can be beneficial to students because such utilities allows users to upload files that can be later be read, edited, or saved by others users if given permission.
ECT201- 2/23 Recap...
In Thursday's class, Dr. Agrawal pretty much made the class an Open Review Session. He encouraged everyone in the class to ask questions about certain areas that were confusing or difficult to learn to them. Hopefully, all of those that needed additional
help with interpreting or grasping certain things with coding took the
advantage of the free class and asked what questions they needed
answered and topics they needed clarified.

This Was The Perfect Opportunity To Catch Up Before Mid-Term...
